No Buy July

No Buy July is upon us!  Starting now, we’ll be saving up a storm while enjoying the great frugal options for making the most of the summer. Today I’m sharing my No Buy July Rules I’ll be following for the month. Feel free to copy or modify to fit your lifestyle if this sounds like a good idea.  Just about every year, I challenge myself to NOT Shop at my favorite stores for 30 day intervals. So far this year, I've completed three months successfully and geared up for July.  So, I stocked up on the necessaries with the exception of groceries. And, that is all I will buy in July.

A lot of factors went into the decision to embark on this major spending freeze we call #NoBuyJuly.  But, it came down to craving a shift in mindset to get back to things that matter most in my life.  Since February of this year, I have not had the desire to buy clothes because I want to create a handmade wardrobe. Now, I have done a sewing restart and made a few items.

With this, ‘No Buy July’  my attempt is to:

  • Cut back on buying things I don’t need
  • Rid of all the excess I’ve filled my life with
  • Stop spending to make myself feel better
  • Put an end to buying things I can’t afford
  • Share a realistic approach to style.

Therefore, effective July 1st – July 31st,  I’m not allowed to treat myself to any material things. No clothing, no shoes, no handbags, no jewelry, no makeup, no beauty products or Fabrics. The exception here will be things that I NEED.  Namely groceries, or take-out food.

No Buy July Rules: The Essentials

These are the allowed items to purchase:

  • Rent/Mortgage
  • Regular bills (utilities, phone bill, etc.)
  • Fresh produce (from the grocery store or the farmers market)
  • Other groceries
  • Toiletries
  • Gas
  • Pet food if necessary.

And that’s basically it!  Sounds a little scarce at first glance, but there’s so much fun to be had for free in the summer, that I know we can do this.

No Buy July Rules: The Non-Essentials

These items are off limits!!!

  • Clothing and accessories
  • Housewares (unless something critical breaks)
  • Games and entertainment
  • Fitness equipment
  • Dining out
  • Vacations
